Say – Tell – Speak – Talk What is the difference?
Tell / Told
Το tell – told – told (λέω) σημαίνει “λέω σε κάποιον κάτι, δίνω πληροφορίες σε κάποιον, αφηγούμαι, ξεχωρίζω, διατάσσω” και ακολουθείται πάντα από πρόσωπο. Examples:-
- Tell me about the movie. Did you like it?
- Peter, I told you not to eat any cookies before dinner!
- Did you tell Sam about what happened at school today?
- The police told us that the situation was under control.
- Derek and Melissa told everybody that they were engaged to be married.
- You should tell her what you think about her idea.
- Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone your secret.
- (to) tell the time – λέω την ώρα
- (to) tell my name – λέω το όνομά μου
- (to) tell a lie / the truth – λέω ένα ψέμα / την αλήθεια
- (to) tell a secret – λέω ένα μυστικό
- (to) tell a story – λέω μια ιστορία
Say / Said
Το say – said – said (λέω) χρησιμοποιείται με τους παρακάτω τρόπους….– say (something) – say that (something) – say (something) to (a person) – “(something)” a person said
Examples:-
- Francis says (that) she doesn’t like chocolate.
- I said that the new website design was great.
- What did the teacher say to you when you failed the test?
- “Nice to meet you,” Harry said.
- Did he say where he had gone?

- (to) say my prayers – λέω / κάνω την προσευχή μου

Speak / Spoke
Το speak – spoke – spoken (μιλάω) το χρησιμοποιούμε με τις γλώσσες και όταν αναφερόμαστε γενικά σε ομιλία, στο λόγο (χωρίς λεπτομέρειες).-
- I speak English.
- Does Donna speak Italian?
- Emma is going to speak in front of 500 people at the conference.

- We spoke to the boss this morning. (συζητήσαμε, χωρίς λεπτομέρειες)
- I need to speak with you about the new project. (γενικά, χωρίς λεπτομέρειες)
Talk
Το talk – talked (μιλάω) το χρησιμοποιούμε όταν αναφερόμαστε γενικά σε ομιλία, στο λόγο : talk with (someone) και talk to (someone).-
- We talk on the phone every week.
- I don’t know why my friend isn’t talking to me!
